How can you describe last night? Thought provoking evening, good party, fantastic fund raiser or a chance to catch up with old friends. All of the above and more.
The presentation by Commodore Jim Patrick gave us a hard lesson in the reality of life for soldiers fighting abroad at the moment. The video clips he used to show why his charity is, unfortunately, so necessary were given the respect they so richly deserved, watched in silence by the audience.
The auctions and fund raising, led by Hannah and Patrick, raised a lot. A very special limited edition Omega watch customised with the SBS insignia that only the SBS have been able to buy so far, sold for an amazing price and if I could have afforded it I would love to have bought the two hours of training for 20 at Chelsea Football Club, just down the road from my mum and dad’s.
Alfie did brilliantly. He silenced the crowd (in a good way) with his acappella singing and later got the joint jumping with his uncannily accurate Michael Bublé impression and then totally confused my choice of first song by finishing with a very un-Michael Bublé Sex on Fire!!! But I stuck to my first plan, played Jackie Wilson’s Reet Petite and once we were off and running we had some classics from some greats and played on well past the finish time. Thanks for the requests, sorry i didn’t have any Barry Manilow, an oversight that’ll be sorted out soon, possibly…
Well done Caroline, Michelle and Maryanne. The room looked great, the table decorations lovely. You can relax until you start work on the next one, I bet you slept well last night.

It would be really nice if you could say that an event like last night would not be needed again. Unfortunately for the people who come back from Afghanistan (or some other foreign field) with half their body missing or their minds totally shot, they’re going to need events like this for the rest of their lives.
More’s the pity.
