Happy Birthday Jules

When the birthday girl gets on the mic before the first song and tells everyone we’re not starting til they all get on the dancefloor you know the night has potential…

Five hours later when they’re still dancing you know either its worked, or all her friends are really scared of Julie!

Some of the highlights

the hog roast,

Steve’s photo montage of some of Julie’s best bits

one of the youngest dancers I’ve ever had on a dance floor

Abba’s Thank you for the music

Shirley’s Hey Big Spender

New York New York

the hospitality of the Benavista Social Club, Benavista

a great crowd of people who danced to a real mix of great music from the fifties to the noughties and threw in some great requests that only made the night more personal and special

And Bentley the St Bernard trying to stop me taking my gear out of the Bar at the end of the evening, (No one puts Bentley in the corner)

Thank you Jules and Steve for asking me to play at such an important birthday party. Roll on the next one…
Thanks to Charlotte and Terry for the recommendation.

Photos to follow hopefully.

Brilliant Birthday Bash

After all the anti-rain dancing, a lot of discussions and sky gazing (and a last minute and probably very) expensive decision to cover their garden in Marquees), it didnt rain during the party on Friday for Steve’s birthday. But it had rained during the day and there were some big black clouds swirling around all day so better to be safe than sorry.

The party was fantastic, everyone had taken the dress glamorous theme to heart, and being greeted by the flashbulbs of the photographer and walking down the red carpet was fun. And the champagne flowed. Their garden made for a stunning setting, and the first time i’ve ever djed on a covered swimming pool. There was a good vibe from the pianist when we arrived and later Laura the singer got almost everyone up and dancing with her big Welsh voice and little black dress.

At a party organised by two people who are such brilliant planners you would expect every detail to be just right, and it was, with the table settings and the flowers all looking lovely. The food from Terrasana was fantastic, a barbecue with a great choice of meats and other dishes, all full of flavours and puddings to die for. Steve and I had talked a lot about the music beforehand and I played a mix of old and new dropping in more spanish music than i was expecting from requests made by guests. ‘Sex on Fire’ kicked off a very bouncey bit of the night which, bearing in mind how much water was under what i was playing on, and they were dancing on, was a bit scary for all of us!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the guests, Lester and I, demonstrated an almost Derren Brown ability to choose the same next song, which was funny for a while, then a bit scary…

I think everyone was amazed how long we carried on for, without any complaints from the neighbours. It was brilliant seeing people enjoying themselves listening and dancing to a wide variety of music over the hours. i even managed to play Morecambe and Wise when i thought everyone was too drunk to notice what they were dancing to anymore. One of my highlights was getting a complaint from one of the guests of honour, and having to explain that the song she didn’t like had been requested by her son!!!

So, happy birthday Steve. Thanks for asking me to DJ for your birthday and well done for finding a way to stop anyone jumping in the pool. I’m really looking forward to seeing Phill Coe’s photos even though when Fiona lit up a flash behind me i thought my gear had gone up in smoke.

Another brilliant Irish Wedding

I’m having a ball.

Last night i djed for Olwyn and David at their wedding at Rio Real Golf. It’s a great venue, amazingly friendly staff. The event was calmly and smoothly organised by Heather at FiestaSol. As well as me, the guests were entertained by Arran and his stunning voice.  His version of Nessum Dorma surprised the guests and got spontaneous applause throught.

But it was such a great night because the bride and groom and their guests were absolutely charming and later threw themselves onto the dancefloor and tore up a storm to a mix of music that included some Irish classics, great rock music, tons of 80s classics, a little bit of r and b and a few country tunes too. And I got to play the Saw Doctors again and see everyone on the dancefloor singing along to ‘the glory of her ass’ again. Top, top, top tune.

And now I can claim to have got a top Irish footballer dancing too, cos Niall Quinn was as powerful a force on the dancefloor as he used to be in the box and he said i was a “grand fella” cos near the end all our watches started going backwards and we finished a bit later than we were meant to!

A really great night and I look forward to many more.

Community Party

Last Saturday I played at the annual party around the pool at Pueblo Andaluz on the La Resina Golf urbanisation.

There were lots of excuses for the party, but it was a great international gathering celebrating some birthdays and enjoying the excuse for a party before the kids go back to school.

Fantastic Wedding at El Rancho del Ingles, Alhaurin

Orla and Conor had organised a fantastic wedding yesterday at el Rancho del Ingles in Alhaurin and, with such a great venue, well out in the campo, we were able to party into the wee small hours and almost back out the other side again.

After a great meal accompanied by the beautiful Spanish guitar of Matt, and a series of heartfelt and hilarious speeches, people were ready for the first dance and once Damien Rice got going they were itching to join in.

I played song after song in different styles. Some of my favourite bits were the dancing to Riverdance and the Pogues(eat your heart out Stavros Flatley) and the whole crowd leaping around to the Saw Doctors I useta love her. Another great time was a sequence of singalongs that included the Green Fields of France and Brothers in Arms.

We had a good disco set, some classic dance with a highlight being Robert Miles Children and a load of great rock with highlights for me including The Killers Human and The Kings of Leon Use Somebody, some ska hits, soul, reggae, loads of party music and squeezed in two by Frank Sinatra and one by Andy Williams too.   A brief description does not do justice to how much energy the music put into the party and how the guests sent that energy back with their brilliant dancing and singing.  I reckon there will be a few sore heads this morning.

i hope i will get more opportunities to play at the venue. it was a great backdrop to a great, great night.

All in all, a fantastic night. with a bit of luck photos to follow soon.

Another great night at Villa Padierna

We had a great night at Villa Padierna last week for the wedding of Sam and Larry. Sam and Larry banned the Macarena, but danced and danced to a great mix of music. some of the highlights were YMCA, Jai Ho and you spin me right round. One of the guests sang a note perfect version of the Darkness I believe in a thing called love, and Josh and his friend scratching on my CD decks to some Flamenco chill music, possibly a musical first there!!!

The requests were for a huge range of music, R and B, pop music, plenty of disco, Abba, tons of great rock, Bon Jovi  and much much more.

A great night with a brilliant friendly set of guests who made for a very special personable intimate wedding that Sam and Larry said they were delighted with and Villa Padierna said I had done another great job for them.
